Apparently, My Brain Doesn’t Know It’s Saturday

Do I work on weekends?

Yep.

Do I take time off on weekdays?

Also yep.

Do I occasionally get my best idea at 11:47 p.m. when I absolutely intended to go to bed?

Unfortunately, also yep. 😂

I have never been particularly good at fitting my life into traditional boxes.

Monday through Friday.

9 to 5.

Work time.

Personal time.

ON.

OFF.

My brain apparently did not receive that employee handbook.

One of the things I have learned about myself is that I do some of my best thinking late at night. Once the world gets quiet, something happens in my brain. The interruptions stop. Nobody needs anything from me. The emails slow down.

And suddenly…

HELLO, CREATIVITY!

That might happen on a Tuesday.

It might happen on a Saturday.

It might happen at midnight when I promised myself I was going to bed at 10.

For a long time, I thought I needed to become more disciplined about working during “normal” hours.

Then I started questioning what normal actually meant.

If I have the flexibility to design my schedule, why would I automatically design it around someone else’s definition of productivity?

Sometimes I work on Saturday because I genuinely WANT to.

Sometimes I take a Tuesday afternoon off because I need it.

Sometimes my son needs me, and whatever I thought was important that day gets moved down the list.

Sometimes I’m on an airplane writing.

Sometimes I’m on my couch thinking.

And sometimes the most productive thing I can possibly do is absolutely nothing.

I’m still learning that last one. 😂

There is a difference between flexibility and never turning work off, though, and I don’t always get that balance right.

Owning a business can make every hour feel like a potential working hour. There is always another email. Another idea. Another thing that could be done.

So I’m trying to pay less attention to whether I’m working at the “right” time and more attention to whether the way I’m working is actually working for me.

Am I energized?

Am I present for the people I love?

Am I creating space to think?

Am I resting when I need rest?

Am I living according to what I value, or am I just staying busy?

Those questions matter more to me than whether my laptop is open on a Saturday.

So yes, you might catch me working this weekend.

You also might catch me doing absolutely nothing on a Wednesday afternoon.

I’m learning to let my life have its own rhythm.

Even if that rhythm occasionally has me writing a blog post at midnight.

  1. I understand! Recently, I was asked to come to a press conference… at 2:30 a.m. on a Monday. Did I go? Of course. It was a compelling story. Yes, I got to bed at 5:00 a.m. and that was nuts, but, as a journalist, my schedule is nuts, and I go to events on weekends. Basically, I work when I need to!!!

  2. Megan, you make great points. I am a huge supporter of following your body’s natural metabolic schedule. I am smartest from 4 am to noon, then smart again from 3-8 pm. Powerful to know that! I have a friend who is a natural night owl. She is up until 3 am, rises maybe 11 am, and makes zero plans to talk or see anyone before 3 pm. And she’s very happy, now that she honors that. So good for you! Keep the schedule your energy calls you to.
