My Favorite Part of the Day Doesnt’ Have a Time

I was supposed to write about my favorite part of the day.

Morning?

Absolutely not. 😂

Afternoon?

Meh.

Evening?

Getting warmer.

But the more I thought about it, I realized my favorite part of the day isn’t actually a time.

It’s the moment I laugh.

Like REALLY laugh.

The kind where something catches me completely off guard, and I lose it.

The kind where someone else starts laughing because I’m laughing.

The kind where I’m trying to tell a story but can’t get the words out because I keep cracking myself up.

THAT might be my favorite part of any day.

I spend a lot of my life thinking about serious things.

Identity. Belonging. Bias. Leadership. Social justice. Parenting. Running a business. Paying bills. What’s happening in the world. What’s happening in my world.

My brain can be a very busy place.

But laughter interrupts all of it.

For a few seconds, there is nothing to solve.

Nothing to analyze.

Nothing to plan.

There is just joy.

And I think I need those moments more than I sometimes realize.

I’ve also noticed that some of my favorite memories aren’t necessarily the big ones.

They’re the ridiculous ones.

The inside jokes nobody else would understand.

The conversations that went completely off the rails.

The times my son said something so funny I couldn’t recover.

The moment someone caught me completely off guard.

Those are the pieces of a day that stick with me.

Maybe that’s why I laugh loudly.

Joy deserves volume.

There is plenty in this world that asks us to be serious. Plenty that deserves our attention, our energy, and sometimes our outrage.

But I don’t want any of that to make me forget how good it feels to laugh until my stomach hurts.

So, if you ask me what part of the day brings me the most joy, I can’t give you a time.

I can tell you what I’m hoping happens at least once during it.

I hope something makes me laugh.

Really, really hard.

  1. Unfortunately, I haven’t been good at keeping notes. But, like Elizabeth Bennet, and you, ‘I dearly love to laugh.’
