Can We Skip the Small Talk?

You know that question we ask people approximately seventeen times a day? “How are you?”
And you know the answer we usually give? “Fine!” Even when we’re not. Even when life is complicated, our brains are running in seventeen directions, and we’re wondering how we’re going to get through the rest of the week. “Fine!” It’s almost automatic. And I get it.
Not every person who asks how we’re doing is inviting us to unpack our entire emotional history in the grocery store checkout line. 😂 But sometimes I wonder how many meaningful conversations we miss because we’re so accustomed to giving the expected answer.
So today, I want to try something different. Imagine we’re sitting together. Maybe at a coffee shop. Maybe on the front porch. Maybe around my kitchen table with something delicious to eat. Because, well, you know me. 😂
There’s no agenda. No presentation. No networking. No need to impress anyone. Just two people having a conversation.
And I ask you a question. How are you REALLY doing?
Not the answer you give your coworkers. Not the version you share on social media. Not the response you offer because you don’t want anyone to worry. The real answer.
What’s bringing you joy right now? What’s weighing on you? What’s something you’re excited about but haven’t told many people? What’s a question you’ve been carrying around that you haven’t had the opportunity to ask? Or maybe there’s something you just need to say out loud.
I’m listening. And if there’s something you’d like my perspective on, I’m happy to share it.
Not because I have all the answers. Goodness knows I don’t. But because I believe some of the most meaningful connections begin when someone feels comfortable enough to tell the truth about how they’re doing.
So here’s today’s invitation. Skip the small talk.
Leave a comment and tell me what’s really on your mind. It can be joyful, messy, complicated, funny, or somewhere in between. You don’t have to make it sound impressive. You don’t even have to turn it into a question.
Just show up as you are. I’ll meet you there.
