My Superhero Didn’t Wear a Cape

When I think about superheroes, I don’t picture someone flying through the sky, lifting cars, or saving the world with extraordinary powers. I picture my grandfather.
Although, interestingly enough, I don’t think I fully understood just how extraordinary he was until after he died.
Growing up, I knew my grandfather was successful. He had been the mayor of a large suburban city. He had served as a vice president of a major bank. He was accomplished, respected, and someone I admired tremendously.
To me, he was simply Grandpa. And then, after he passed away, I learned something about him that completely changed the way I understood his life.
My grandfather never graduated from high school.
Wait. WHAT?!?!
This man, who had accomplished so much professionally and personally, had never earned his high school diploma. And apparently, he hadn’t wanted me to know. I’ve thought about that revelation so many times over the years. Why didn’t he want me to know?
Was he embarrassed? Did he worry I would think less of him? Did he want me to believe that education was the only path to success?
I wish I could ask him. Especially because, as someone who spent so many years working in education, I have a LOT of questions.
But here’s what I do know. My grandfather accomplished extraordinary things without a credential that society often treats as the minimum requirement for success.
He found ways to lead. He found ways to contribute. He found ways to earn the respect of others. He built a life that mattered. And somewhere along the way, he apparently decided there was a part of his story that was better left untold.
That makes me a little sad. Because the very thing he may have considered a weakness became one of the things I admire most about him.
His story reminds me that we know so little about what people have overcome to become who they are. We see the titles. The accomplishments. The impressive résumés. But we rarely see the obstacles, insecurities, sacrifices, and decisions behind them.
I wonder how many people looked at my grandfather and assumed his path had been straightforward. I certainly did.
And I wonder how differently he might have seen himself if he had known that his granddaughter would someday consider his unfinished education part of what made his story so remarkable.
I loved my grandfather before I knew his secret. But somehow, learning it made me admire him even more.
He didn’t need a cape. He didn’t need superpowers. And as it turns out, he didn’t even need a high school diploma to become one of the most accomplished people I knew.
He was my superhero.
I just wish I’d had the chance to tell him why.
