Three Words That Inspire Me More Than You Might Think

I’ve met some pretty extraordinary people in my life. People with impressive titles. Incredible accomplishments. Fascinating stories. People who have overcome obstacles I can barely imagine. And yes, many of them inspire me.

But do you know what REALLY gets my attention?

Three little words. “I was wrong.”

Seriously. There is something incredibly powerful about a person who can acknowledge that something they believed, said, or did wasn’t right. Especially when they believed it with their whole heart.

Think about how difficult that can be. We spend years developing our beliefs. Our families influence us. Our communities shape us. Our experiences reinforce what we think we know. And then someone comes along with a different perspective.

Suddenly, we have a choice. We can defend what we’ve always believed. Or we can get curious.

Now, I’m not suggesting we abandon our convictions every time someone disagrees with us. Not at all.

But I AM suggesting that there is something extraordinary about being confident enough in ourselves to acknowledge that we don’t know everything.

I have so much respect for people who can say:

“I never thought about it that way.”

“Can you help me understand?”

“I’ve learned something new.”

And, of course… “I was wrong.”

Those statements don’t make someone less intelligent, less capable, or less credible. In my eyes, they make that person even more remarkable. Because changing your mind can be uncomfortable. Sometimes it means questioning something you’ve believed since childhood. Sometimes it means acknowledging that someone you disagreed with had a point. Sometimes it means apologizing. And sometimes it means realizing that the world is far more complicated than the version you’ve been carrying around in your head.

I’ve experienced that discomfort myself. And while I can’t say I always welcome it with open arms (I’m human, after all!), I’ve learned that some of my most meaningful growth has come from moments when I was willing to reconsider what I thought I knew.

So, when people ask me who inspires me, I could give them a list of famous names. But the truth is, I’m often most inspired by ordinary people doing something extraordinarily difficult.

Being willing to learn. Being willing to listen. Being willing to grow.

Even when nobody is applauding. Especially when nobody is applauding.

Because sometimes the most inspiring thing a person can do isn’t stand up and declare what they believe.

It’s have the courage to say, “I believe something different now.”

  1. There are many people who will never acknowledge that they are wrong. They will just repeat their wrong comments over and over again with enthusiasm. It takes a person who has that right blend of self confidence and humility to say, “Yes, I was wrong.” We all need to understand that it’s okay to say that. It is not the easiest thing in the world.

  2. Yes! There is so much to admire about someone who can admit to being wrong about something and being open about it! It is not easy to do. Being human is a messy and complicated experience.
