Family Isn’t Always Blood. And Life Isn’t Always Pretty.

I recently watched Babes on Netflix.
And let me tell you, if you’re looking for a movie that makes life look perfectly organized, predictable, and Instagram-worthy… This ain’t it. 😂 But that’s part of what I loved about it.
At its heart, Babes explores friendship, motherhood, relationships, and all the beautifully chaotic things that happen when life doesn’t follow the script we imagined.
And it got me thinking about two things I believe deeply. Family isn’t always blood. And life can be an absolute mess AND incredibly rewarding at the same time.
Let’s start with family. Some of the most meaningful relationships in our lives aren’t necessarily with people who share our DNA. They’re with the people who show up. The ones who answer the phone when everything is falling apart. The ones who know when we need advice and when we just need someone to listen. The ones who have seen us at our absolute worst and somehow still want to hang out with us. 😂 The ones who celebrate our victories without jealousy and sit beside us through our struggles without judgment. THOSE are our people. And I think there’s something incredibly beautiful about recognizing that family can be something we create, not simply something we’re born into.
Then there’s the messiness of life. Oh, goodness. If there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life rarely unfolds the way we expect. Relationships change. Plans fall apart. People surprise us. WE surprise ourselves. Sometimes we’re laughing so hard we can’t breathe. Sometimes we’re crying and wondering how we’re going to make it through the next five minutes. And sometimes we’re doing both on the same day.
But here’s what I find fascinating. We spend so much time trying to make life look like we’ve figured it all out. We want the beautiful moments without the uncomfortable ones. The relationships without the complications. The growth without the growing pains. The joy without the uncertainty. But what if the mess isn’t something we have to get through before we get to the good stuff?
What if the mess is part of the good stuff?
Some of the most meaningful moments in life happen when things aren’t going according to plan. When someone shows up unexpectedly. When a difficult conversation brings people closer. When we discover we’re stronger, more capable, or more loved than we realized. And when we learn that the people who matter most aren’t necessarily the ones we expected to be standing beside us.
That’s what Babes reminded me.
Life doesn’t have to be tidy to be beautiful. Relationships don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. And family doesn’t have to share our blood to share our hearts.
So here’s to the people who love us through the chaos. The ones who laugh with us, cry with us, challenge us, and occasionally make us question our sanity. 😂
Life is messy. Love is messy. Family is messy.
And I wouldn’t trade the beautiful parts just to avoid the messy ones.
