Sometimes Getting Through It IS the Accomplishment

Have you ever had one of those weeks when EVERYTHING seems to need your attention? Not just the little things. The BIG things. The things that actually matter. The things that can’t wait until next Tuesday. And somehow, they all happen at once.

Welcome to my life sometimes. 😂

As a single mom and business owner, I’m pretty accustomed to juggling multiple responsibilities. I’ve got meetings, deadlines, clients, projects, emails, decisions, and a seemingly endless list of things that need to get done.

And then there’s my most important role. Mom.

Recently, I’ve had some reminders that no matter how carefully I plan my days, life doesn’t always cooperate. Sometimes family needs take priority. Sometimes plans have to change. Sometimes the things I thought were urgent suddenly become a whole lot less important. And sometimes I find myself staring at my to-do list thinking, “There is absolutely NO WAY all of this is getting done.”

For someone who likes to have a plan, that can be incredibly frustrating. Because I WANT to do it all. I want to be present for my son. I want to honor my commitments. I want to build a successful business. I want to show up for the people who count on me. And I’d really love to get a decent night’s sleep somewhere in there. 😂

But here’s something I’m learning. Just because something matters doesn’t mean it all has to happen today.

That sounds simple. It isn’t always easy.

I’ve had to get more comfortable moving things around. Asking for help. Letting people know when I need additional time. And accepting that sometimes the most responsible decision is to stop trying to do everything. Not because I’ve stopped caring. But because I care enough to recognize what needs me most.

I’ve also had to rethink what it means to successfully navigate a difficult season. Sometimes success looks like finishing everything on the list. Sometimes it looks like having a difficult conversation. Sometimes it looks like being exactly where your child needs you to be. And sometimes it looks like making it to bedtime knowing that a whole lot of things are still unfinished.

That last one can be tough for me. I’m a doer. A problem solver. A person who likes to figure things out and keep moving.

But life doesn’t always give us a neat little resolution. Sometimes the challenge continues tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that.

So I’m trying to give myself a little more room to be human. To recognize that my capacity changes. To remember that asking for help doesn’t diminish what I’m capable of doing. And to stop measuring every day by how much I accomplished.

If you’re navigating one of those seasons right now, maybe this will resonate. You don’t have to solve every problem today. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. And you don’t have to earn the right to rest by finishing every item on your list.

Sometimes getting through a difficult day, loving your people, and doing what you reasonably can is enough.

Not every challenge ends with a victory lap. Sometimes the victory is simply making it through.
