How the Fresh Prince Taught Me a Lesson I Never Forgot

I have a confession. I can still remember the theme song to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Like, REALLY remember it. Decades later, I can hear that music and immediately start reciting the words. Apparently, my brain has reserved permanent storage space for Will Smith. 😂

But there’s a reason that particular song has stuck with me. And it has absolutely nothing to do with the show itself.

Let me take you back to middle school. I was in marching band, and I had music I needed to memorize. And I was NOT happy about it.

I remember complaining to my dad about how difficult it was going to be. There was SO much music to learn, and I couldn’t possibly be expected to memorize all of it. Or at least that’s what I was trying to convince him.

As I was complaining, I walked into the living room. And guess what was on television?

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The theme song started playing. And without missing a beat, I started reciting every single word. EVERY. SINGLE. WORD.

My dad looked at me. I looked at him. And then he said something I have never forgotten. “If you can memorize these lyrics, you can memorize your music!”

Ugh. Don’t you just HATE when your parents are right?! 😂

Of course, he had a point. I had just spent several minutes explaining why memorizing music was practically impossible, only to demonstrate that I had somehow memorized an entire television theme song without even trying. Busted.

But here’s what I find interesting about that moment all these years later.

My dad didn’t give me a long lecture. He didn’t tell me I was lazy. He didn’t sit me down and explain the importance of discipline. He simply pointed out something I was already capable of doing. And suddenly, my excuse didn’t hold quite as much weight.

Now, I wish I could tell you that from that moment forward, I eagerly memorized every piece of music I was ever given. Let’s not get carried away. 😂

But I never forgot what he said. And to this day, whenever I hear that theme song, I think about my dad standing there, watching me prove his point for him.

It’s funny how certain songs become attached to memories. Some remind us of our first love. Some take us back to a particular summer. Some make us want to dance. And some remind us of the exact moment our parents caught us being ridiculous.

For me, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will always be that song. My dad was right. And he didn’t even have to say, “I told you so.”
